In Sharon Creech's Walk Two Moons, Sal's mother abandoned her family.  Sal remembers how her mother had suffered a miscarriage and severe bout of depression just before she abandoned her family.  Sal believes that her mother's miscarriage resulted in a severe psychological depression that caused her mother to become emotionally unhinged and abandon her family.
