Do the phrases 6 less a number and 6 less than a number mean the same thing?

6 less a number implies 6 decreased by a certain number
that would be 6-n where n is the number

6 less than a number implies a number decreased by 6
that would be n-6 where n is the number

so they probably don't mean the same thing
