The sun maintains its spherical shape is due to the radially symmetrical nature  of the gravitational force.

On the other hand, the sun maintains its size and shape due to the external pressure of fusion energy due to the force of gravity.  There is a stable balance between the gas pressure that is directed outward and the force of gravity that is directed inward.
