The number of generations the cells must have gone through would be 6.

Cell division

When each of the 6 cells divides the 1st time, 12 cells result

The 2nd time, 24 cells result

The 3rd time, 48 cells result

The 4th time, 96 cells

The 5th time, 192 cells

The 6th time, 384 cells.

Thus, the cells must have divided 6 times.
