move the -3 1/4 to the other side by adding 3 1/4 .
2 5/12 + 3 3/12= K
then add to find the value of K

I like to move my isolated number to the side, but that is just me:
-3 1/4 + k = 2 5/12
You're going to add 3 1/4 to both sides since we are doing the inverse operation.
2 5/12 + 3 1/4
k =5 2/3
