manual workers got replaced by machines who were more efficient. This created loss in employment. The machines still had to be run and people were paid way less for maintenance. Less employment also meant more competition and those who worked the hardest were more likely to be employed. As a result people started working harder for less money. As the investors got wealthier by investing in machines, the working class got poor and started living in slums
