y = x - 4

y = -3x

basically you replace one of the unknown numbers in one of the equations so the equation will have only one unknown number.

y = -3x

so that means that

-3x = x - 4

you solve the equation:

x = -4 : -4

x = 1

Now we know that x is 1 so now we find out what is y

y = 1 - 4

y = -3
