Inertia regards objects staying in rest or in motion unless an outside force alters this. An example would be kicking a soccer ball. It was originally still (not moving) on the turf, until your kick altered this and set it into motion. Similarly, the friction of the turf will alter this state of motion by eventually bring the ball to a complete stop.
