The cotton gin lead to the spread of slavery because the invention (by Eli Whitney) allowed the cotton seeds to be taken out by machine rather than by hand. This meant that more slaves had to grow and get the cotton to bring to the cotton gin, which meant that the whites had to buy more land and more slaves.
