People weren't allowed to own land, follow their religious beliefs, or speak and act freely. People were afraid that the Soviets would take over the U.S and take away their freedoms.
People always fear what they do not understand and it serves the government’s purpose not to dispel public misconceptions about the communist bogeyman.
