Say we have a function, f such that f(x) = x^r. If f is a real number and is differentiable at x, then:

f'(x) = rx^(r-1)

Which means the derivative of f is equal to x times the original exponent r to the r minus 1 power. This only works if f satisfies the conditions previously described, however.
