Odysseus character is very cunning and intelligent. He demonstrates this by telling Polyphemus that he was "nobody", which gives him an advantage in blinding him.

 Odysseus is a strategist like few others and many of his battles he wins without giving a single blow. Of course, no matter how clever he may be, the return home will be extremely complicated.
