How do writers evoke compassion
from their readers?

A writer can connect you to a character via emotion. You follow them throughout the story and you begin to understand them and their feelings. So when the character is experiencing a time in which they are in need of compassion, the reader will feel a need to provide said compassion. All because they are connected emotionally to that character.
