A tree that is 5 feet tall is growing at a rate of 1 foot per year. A 6 foot tall tree is growing at a rate of 0.5 foot per year. In how many years will the tree height be the same?

Both trees would be the same in 2 years at 7 feet.

Let’s call the tree in which is growing at a rate of 1 foot per year Tree A, and the tree growing 0.5 feet a year Tree B. In 2 years Tree A will be 7 feet high. Tree B, in two years will be 7 feet, because .5 x 2 is equal to 1 foot. Therefore making Tree B 7 feet.

In two years Tree A (1 foot per year), and Tree B (0.5 feet per year) will grow to 7 feet.
